Phil Ivey has been referred to as the number one poker player in the world by most of the top-ranked pros. Phil Ivey was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to NJ before reaching the age of 1. His papa taught him one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was hooked on poker and wished to learn every little thing he could about poker. Phil routinely told his elders that he was going to be a professional poker player. Phil did not let the negative comments from others destroy his dream of being one of the strongest poker players in the world.
Phil started playing seriously after getting a false ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his abilities at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The initial few years for him were a teaching opportunity and coming away with a win wasn’t a regular thing at the time. He became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he made 2 final tables and won his 1st WSOP bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the last table he destroyed a number of the better known professionals including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil made a decision to take his game to the next level and headed out west to Sin City. Phil continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players on the planet. Ivey credits his success to hard work and an eternal passion for poker. He says that he’s learning every single day and is quite abashed about his achievements. Phil admits to making mistakes in each session of poker and constantly strives to improve.
Despite the fact that Ivey has come first in some big tournaments, he prefers destroying money games on a regular basis.
