Phil began playing seriously after getting a false ID by the name of Jerome. He honed his skills at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The first number of years for him were a teaching opportunity and winning wasn’t a regular outcome at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 WSOP when he achieved two final tables and came away with his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the closing table he defeated quite a few of the better known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He made a decision to take his game to the successive level and headed out west to Sin City. Phil continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Ivey credits his achievements to discipline and an immeasurable passion for the game of poker. Phil says that he is learning every day and is incredibly abashed about his accomplishments. Despite the fact that Phil has won some big-time tournaments, he likes winning cash games on a normal basis.
