Phil Ivey has been labeled as the best poker contender in the world by quite a few of the top professionals. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to New Jersey before his first birthday. His grandpa taught Phil one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was hooked on poker and wished to discover every little thing he possibly could about poker. He routinely told his parents that he was planning on being a professional poker player. Phil didn’t permit the detrimental feedback from others destroy his dream of becoming one of the strongest poker competitors on the planet.

He began competing seriously after acquiring a fake ID by the name of Jerome. He practiced his techniques at the casinos of Atlantic City. The initial few years for him were a teaching period and coming away with a win wasn’t a normal thing at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 WSOP when he achieved 2 final tables and came away with his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the closing table he destroyed many of the better known pros including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

He decided to take his game to the successive level and headed out west to Las Vegas. He continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Phil credits his achievements to hard work and a continuing love for poker. He states that he is learning every day and is incredibly abashed about his success. Phil admits to making errors every single game of poker and constantly strives to improve.

Even though Ivey has won some big-time tournaments, he prefers winning cash games on a normal basis.
